Bracket Week: Defending Champion Hornets Fall

Gary Hall's Hornets had their season ended on Tuesday.
The defending Group AAA Northern Region champion Herndon boys basketball team was bounced from the regional tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, dropping a 77-71 decision to visiting Wakefield.
The Warriors got 29 points from all-region swingman George Johnson to off-set 24 points from Hornets senior forward Danny Jones and 21 points from senior guard Richard Gore. Wakefield (22-4), the 2005 regional champions, advances on to face West Springfield (19-5) in the semifinals at George Mason University's Patriot Center on Friday. Herndon's season ends at 21-3.
In Friday's other semifinal, Patriot District champion T.C. Williams (23-3) will take on upstart Chantilly (15-10), which is the third seed out of the Concorde District.
In girls action, Concorde District champion Oakton (25-1) got 25 points from senior guard Jasmine Thomas as the Cougars advanced to the semifinals with a 46-34 win over Lee-Springfield. Oakton will meet Liberty District champion Marshall (23-4), with National District champion Edison (26-1), the defending region champion, taking on T.C. Williams (19-6) in the other semifinal.
Both of the girls semifinals will be held at the Patriot Center on Thursday night.
In Group AA Region II action on Wednesday night, the Potomac Falls boys (18-7) will host Handley (22-2) in one quarterfinal game while Broad Run (17-7) travels to Millbrook (22-4). On the girls side, the Broad Run (20-5) girls play host to Fluvanna while the Park View girls (19-6) travel to Charlottesville.
