Phoebus Takes on Thomas Edison for State Title

Newport News, VA -After a Matt Cole field goal gave Phoebus (12-1) a 31-28 double-overtime win over Potomac in the Division 5 state semifinals, the Phantoms prepare to meet Thomas Edison. The game will be held at Todd Stadium in Hampton at 12:30. Against Potomac, star running back Dennis Mathis had trouble getting going but eventually he and fullback Haroon Brown began finding holes. Mathis finished the game with a just 91 yards on 25 attempts. Brown added 77 yards on 19 carries. Despite his lowest rushing total of the season, Mathis did break the 2,000 yard barrier for the season.

The Edison (11-2) Eagles advanced to the state final for the first time since 1986 after knocking off Deep Run, 20-3.

Having already defeated a Potamac team ranked 5th in the D.C. area, the Phantoms should be favored against the Eagles who were ranked 13th.
