WV and VA Football Facts and Numbers

With the high school football season coming to an end for many teams Gameday takes a look at some interesting facts and numbers from the 2006 season.

Which district or Gameday area plays the best football?

Teams from Loudoun County, Winchester area, and WV panhandle have competed against each other at times throughout the season. Here is how they fared against each other.

West Virginia Panhandle versus Winchester area= 0wins 5 losses
West Virginia Panhandle versus Loudoun County= 9 wins 2 losses

Loudoun County versus West Virginia Panhandle= 2 wins 9 losses
Loudoun County versus Winchester area= 0 wins 4 losses

Winchester area versus West Virginia Panhandle= 5 wins 0 losses
Winchester area versus Loudoun County= 4 wins 0 losses

So what does all this mean? Not a whole lot except I think you can take from the numbers that the Winchester area is the best area of football from top to bottom in terms of depth. Against Loudoun County and West Virginia Panhandle the Winchester area teams were a perfect 9-0.

Who are the best teams from the 3 markets?

You could give an argument for many teams. But looking at records and strength of schedule I think each market has a dominant team. (8-1) Park View, (9-1) Martinsburg and (9-0) Sherando are all great teams.

So who is the best team?
Flip a coin but here is a guess looking at this years schedules. Martinsburg traveled to Park View in week 6 and defeated the Patriots 14-7. Martinsburg's lone loss came from powerhouse Urbana out of Maryland. Sherando has not lost a game this season. With all that said I feel Martinsburg versus Sherando would be the game of the year and it would be safe to say that the winner of that game would be the best team in the Gameday market.

Who had the toughest schedule?
In my opinion it was the Musselman Applemen (3-7)! The Applemen schedule was brutal! The opposing teams combined win loss record is 61-36 with three Virginia schools still having to play one more game. Musselman faced 5 teams that are playoff bound!
1. Keyser (7-3) ranked #8 in West Virginia class AA
2. Bridgeport (8-2) ranked #8 in West Virginia class AAA
3. Martinsburg (9-1) ranked #2 in West Virginia class AAA
4. Fort Hill (8-1) Maryland 2A Powerhouse
5. Sherando (9-0) ranked #1 in Region II Division 4 in Virginia

What does the future hold for our area football teams?

In West Virginia the regular season is over and post season is here! The top 16 teams in each classification (A, AA, AAA) are seeded based on wins and points awarded for opponent's victories.

In class AA #8 ranked Keyser will face #9 Magnolia at Frankfort High School on Saturday at 1:30pm.

In class AAA #2 ranked Martinsburg will face #15 Brooke at Martinsburg High School on Saturday at 1:30pm. If the Bulldogs continue to win they would have home field advantage until the championship game which is held at Wheeling Island Stadium.

The Virginia schools all have one game left to play so every game still has huge significance.
Sherando at Millbrook, Handley at James Wood, Broad Run at Park View and Dominion at Potomac Falls all are pivotal games for each team and could effect playoff implications.

The Liberty Eagles will keep a close watch on the Harisonburg/R.E. Lee game. If R.E. Lee was to upset Harrisonburg then Liberty would receive the wild card birth with a win over Brentsville this week!
