Pride's Young Named Region Player of Year
Sterling, VA - Heritage senior Rachel Young has been named the Group AA Region II girls volleyball player of the year and Loudoun County's Jenica Matthias was named the region's coach of the year by her fellow coaches this week.
Young led the Pride to the regional final and into the state tournament before having their season ended by Grafton in a straight-set loss in Tuesday's state quarterfinals. Heritage finished 21-7 overall.
Matthias, meanwhile, guided the Raiders to the region championship and has Loudoun County (27-2) into the state semifinals, where it faces Brookeville tomorrow at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center in Richmond.
Joining Young on the first team were Loudoun County senior Amanda Arbogast and junior Marguerite Hanna, Sherando sophomore Danielle Caputo, James Wood junior MacKenzie Tingle and Waynesboro senior Cynthia Adkins.
Earning second-team honors were Heritage senior Katherine Buttery, Western Albermarle senior Caitlin Shelley, Fluvanna junior Lindsay Hurt, Fort Defiance junior Katlyn Shiflett, Stuarts Draft junior Tabitha Bowman and Lee-Staunton senior Brittany Swann.
