Notebook: Northern Va. Playoff Picture Clears

Sterling, VA - A handful of emphatic victories dominated the Week 9 action in Northern Virginia as several teams separated themselves in the race for the Group AA Division 4 Region II and Group AAA Division 5 and 6 Northern Region playoff chases.

In Falls Church, senior tailback Devon "Ylou" Brown rushed for three touchdowns, pushing his season total to 22, as Stone Bridge (9-0 overall, 6-0 Liberty District) rolled past George C. Marshall (7-2, 4-2), 45-14, to clinch the district championship and secure a Division 5 playoff berth. Senior quarterback Terence Glenn added a touchdown pass and run while sophomore tailback Daniel Allen had a 71-yard scoring run for the Bulldogs.

In Concorde District action, senior Ervin Garner had three first-half touchdowns as Oakton (5-4, 3-3) rolled past Fairfax (1-8, 0-5), 52-0, to put itself in position to clinch the fourth and final Division 6 berth with a win next week over Patriot District champion Annandale (6-3, 6-1), which dispatched of Robert E. Lee-Springfield, 21-6, on Friday. Westfield (9-0, 5-0), in Gameday Magazine's Game of the Week, held on to defeat host Chantilly (7-2, 4-1), 34-28 and clinch the district title. Despite the loss, the Chargers qualified for the postseason and will likely be the No. 3 seed when the playoffs begin on Nov. 17.

Herndon (5-4, 2-3), meanwhile, defeated Centreville (5-4, 2-3), 47-41 in triple overtime to gain its first victory over the Wildcats in a decade.

In what used to be the Patriot District's annual clash of the titans but is now a non-district match-up after James Robinson's move to the Concorde two years ago, the Rams (6-3) slipped past Lake Braddock (5-4), 14-6, keeping their playoff hopes alive entering next week's season finale at Westfield. The loss all but ends the Bruins' push for the postseason.

Finally, in Leesburg, Park View (8-1, 4-0 Dulles District) rolled past winless Loudoun County, 48-13, behind another big night from senior tailback Derek Dudinski to inch closer to a Division 4 berth. Dudinski had 3 rushing touchdowns and finished with 140 yards on the ground and also intercepted a pass and returned it for a score in the game. With the win, Park View clinched a share of the Dulles District title. Next week's game will decide whether or not Park View will host a first round playoff game. The Patriots play Broad Run on Friday November 10th.
