Martinsburg Is Moving On With A 13-2 Victory

The Martinsburg Bulldog football team is moving on to the West Virginia Class AAA Semifinals with a win over South Charleston 13-2. Saturday at Coburn Field was the setting for a quarterfinal football game that featured numerous outstanding athletes who were capable of making game changing plays. Martinsburg featured an offense averaging 32 points a game with two running backs in Josh Twyman and Marcus Scott who have combined for close to 3,000 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns this season. South Charleston entered the contest with two players who have combined for 2,500 all-purpose yards and 25 touchdowns on the season. With all of that offense on the field you would expect an explosive high scoring football game correct? Wrong, the defenses for both teams continuously kept making play after play and turned this game into a very strategic game where a 5 yard play was a big one.

The Martinsburg defense has been huge all season for the Bulldogs but in the "Second Season" they have been simply dominant. Against South Charleston the swarming Bulldog defense gave up 118 total yards and held the Black Eagles to five first downs the entire game. The Bulldog defense flexed there muscles in the 3rd quarter with the score 7-2 and the Black Eagles recovering a fumble at there own 5 yard line. After 4 downs of play the mighty Bulldog defense not only stopped the Black Eagles from scoring they forced them to lose 5 yards.

With the score tied 0-0 at the half both teams jogged off into the locker room questioning who would make the first big play. The Bulldogs marched down the field and ran an outstanding option play resulting in a 26 yard Cameron Shelton TD run. After a blocked punt in the Bulldogs end zone the Black Eagles were on the board with a 7-2 deficit. Both teams trading huge defensive stands until Marcus Scott did what he does best and that is come up with a game changing play. Scott took the handoff and exploded down the Bulldogs sideline to give the Bulldogs a 13-2 lead which resulted in being the final score.

With the win Martinsburg moves on to the Semifinals to face Fairmont Senior. The victory also added to Coach Dave Walker's legacy as the Bulldog coach. In the past 6 years Martinsburg has played in 5 Semifinal games which is a remarkable feat to achieve.
