Whaley sets All Time Season Scoring Record

Kevin Whaley sets all time single season scoring record
Rick Kresinske posted 307 yards on 11 of 14 completions in the first half and Kevin Whaley broke the all time single season scoring record at 184 points, rushing 11 times for 165 yards and scoring 4TD and a 2-point conversion. Salem finished as Beach District Champs beating Kellam 36-0 and finishing 10-0. Coach Robert Jackson reminded us that Whaley is a Junior and will shatter more records next season.
In other games, Tallwood secured their spot in the playoffs for the first time since 1998 with a win over First Colonial 21-14. The Lions, who finished 2-8 last season was the biggest surprise this year with a spectacular turnaround. Brian Jackson finished the night with 8/21 103 yards and 1TD. Rashad Jones and Darren Webb contributed 150 yards and 2TD together.
The Cox Falcons finished a disappointing season 3-7 with an upset win over Kempsville, mostly off the foot of Drew Jarrett, a sophmore kicker who has had a good season overall. He was successful at 31,33 and 45 and just missed at 52.
In other Beach District play, Landstown held on to their hopes for a playoff berth with a win over Bayside 23-0. The Eagles were hoping for a Tallwood loss which would have secured their spot, however even though Tallwood won, they still have a chance, depending on tonight's Indian River/Oscar Smith game. If Indian River upsets Oscar Smith, the Eagles are in. The Eagles defense was the key to stopping an otherwise strong offensive team in Bayside, forcing 5 turnovers and holding the areas #2 quarterback, EJ Manuel in check, sacking him 8 times and keeping pressure on him all night. Manuel finished the night with 168 yards, finishing the season at 1981 yards and 3885 for his career. He is ranked 8th on the all time career passing list in Hampton Roads.
In the most surprising upset of the season, Granby (2-8) defeated Maury (8-2) in a shocker 16-15. Maury still has a spot in the playoffs, but had a chance to win the district outright with a win over Granby. Maury had a chance to win the game in the final seconds but a penalty against the Offensive Coordinator for unsportsmanlike conduct set them back the 15 yards that put an end to their drive.
