Fairfax/Loudoun News & Notes

Sterling, VA - Several playoff spots are up for grabs on Friday night as local football teams get back to work on Monday in preparation for the final week of the regular season.

Concorde District champion Westfield (9-0) claimed the top seed and Annandale (6-3) and Chantilly (7-2) also secured Group AAA Division 6 Northern Region playoff berths last Friday, leaving Robinson (6-3), Oakton (5-4) and Lake Braddock (5-4) to battle for the final spot. This marks the fifth consecutive trip to the postseason for Westfield, while Annandale makes its second straight appearance and Chantilly advances to the postseason for the first time since winning the state championship in 1996.

Undefeated Stone Bridge (9-0), meanwhile, has locked in the top seed in the Division 5 playoffs after winning the Liberty District championship following last Friday's 45-14 win at Marshall (7-2). Yorktown (8-1) also clinched a Division 5 berth and the National District crown. Edison (7-2) can take the third spot with a win at Mount Vernon (5-4) on Friday, with South County (6-3), Madison (6-3) and Marshall jockying for the final spot.

Park View (8-1), meanwhile, has claimed a Group AA Region II Division 4 berth, and already knows its regional semifinal opponent as it prepares for its season finale against Broad Run (5-4) on Friday. The Patriots, who claimed the Dulles District title following their 48-13 win at Loudoun County last Friday, will face Louisa County on Nov. 17, with the location to be determined by season-ending power points.

Dudinski Approaches 2,000: Senior Deric Dudinski accounted for four touchdowns - three on the ground and one on a 70-yard interception return - in Park View's 48-13 win at Loudoun County. Dudinski finished with 141 yards on just nine carries, pushing his season totals to an area-high 1,780 yards and 23 touchdowns on 181 carries.

Running Wild: Dudinski wasn't the only local back to come up big on Friday. Broad Run's Clayton Abel ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries in a 26-14 win over Dominion, while Langley's Josh Segal ran for a career-high 227 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries in a 28-0 defeat of Woodson, Stone Bridge's Devon "Ylou" Brown rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Also, Westfield's Brian Kennedy ran for 117 yards on just nine carries - including touchdown runs of 36 and 45 yards - in a 34-28 win at Chantilly and Robinson's David Laiti had 121 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in a 14-6 win over Lake Braddock and Oakton's Jon Kedrock had 133 yards and a score on just eight carries in a 52-0 drubbing of Fairfax.

Double Trouble: Two teams saw multiple backs eclipse 100 yards last Friday night. In Madison's 35-14 win over Jefferson (2-7), Aaron Lambert (12 carries, 227 yards, one touchdown) and Ranyer Bravo (7, 120, 2) each went over the century mark. And in Yorktown's 38-0 win over Wakefield, Max Millien (11, 147, 3) and Robbie Shivers (16, 145, 0) both eclipsed the mark.

Sibling Similarities: One day after Westfield junior quarterback Mike Glennon threw for 172 yards and a touchdown in a 34-28 win at Chantilly, older brother Sean, Virginia Tech's starting signal caller, helped the Hokies to a 17-10 win at the University of Miami (Fla.) on Saturday night.

Air It Out: West Springfield senior quarterback Peter Lalich, a University of Virginia signee, completed 19-of-22 passes for 356 yards and a school-record eight touchdowns in the Spartans' 63-15 victory over winless Hayfield. Lalich has thrown for 29 touchdowns to just seven interceptions this fall.
