Eagles Finish 9-1 In 41-18 Win, But Season Ends
(Nokesville, VA)--The Liberty Eagles (9-1, 6-1) came into Friday night needing a win and some help from R.E. Lee. The Eagles took care of their part of that equation; however, R.E. Lee was unable to do their part as they fell to Harrisonburg late in the 4th quarter. The Eagles handled the Brentsville Tigers (5-5, 3-4) 41-18 led by Myles Reid who tallied 208 yards on 19 carries while scoring twice.
Liberty started the game slow as Wayne Conner threw an interception on the first play of the night. The Tigers were unable to convert in 4 plays; trouble that would haunt them as the night continued. After the change of possession Liberty took charge as Wayne Conner hooked up Chris Ball-Whitfield for a 63 yard touchdown pass to take the early lead. Conner led the Eagles air attack throwing for more than 125 yards and two touchdowns. Another senior that ended his high school career on a very high note was DeVaughn Parson who sacked quarterback P.J. Borko 3 times in the game.
Brentsville was led by one of its 15 seniors on the night, as Joe Walton passed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season. Brentsville never quit during the night, but were overmatched by the quicker and larger Liberty team. Brentsville also came into the game tonight needing help to make the playoffs. The Tigers needed Western Albemarle to lose their game so that the team could make the postseason for the first time in 4 years. The result of the Western Albemarle game was unknown at the time of publication.
Liberty's season is over and the Eagles are looking forward to next season and the move to AAA. They will return many players who gained valuable experience this year; and with the move up in classification look for Coach Buzzo and his staff to have this team prepared for August 2007.
