Sherando runs past Handley 24-13 to go to 5-0



On a rain soaked field in Winchester, VA the Sherando Warriors defeated Handley 24-13. Saturday's football game was a much anticipated contest between two dominant football programs that lived up to its billing. Handley jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on a JJ Dorsey 4 yard TD run. Sherando responded with a 2 yard TD romp by running back David Hoopengarner. Each teams traded field position for a few series until Hoopengarner stormed into the endzone again giving Sherando a 12-6 half time lead.

Both teams came out of the locker room with intensity and played a very physical second half. Sherando continued their dominance on the ground scoring on a 7 yard TD run by Markeith Briscoe to stretch the Warrior lead to 18-6 with 8 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. On Handley's next possession the judges marched ran down the field and scored on a JJ Dorsey 14 yard TD, his second of the game. With momentum swinging to Handley, the Sherando football team responded on their first play by going 64 yards for a TD by Markeith Briscoe. That TD run which was the 4th of the day for the Warriors sealed the win for the 5-0 Sherando football team.

In the end the game was won in the trenches by an aggressive Sherando football team. The Warriors offensive line allowed their running backs to rush for 300 plus yards as a team and controlled the clock with their dominant running attack. David Hoopengarner (25/144) and Markeith Briscoe (12/133) each were able to run for over 100 yards to lead the Warriors to victory. Handley displayed there big play and quick scoring ability on offense but some key turnovers gave Sherando some extra chances on offense which they capitalized on. Both teams are to be commended on their sportsmanship and effort given by every player.
