Metheny's Late TD Helps Sherando to 8-0

With all the hype surrounding the matchup between 7-0 Sherando and 6-1 James Wood you would expect one team to feel the pressure and not show up! That is not what happened Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. James Wood and Sherando both played there hearts out and gave the standing room only crowd a fantastic game. Sherando came out of the gates on fire going ahead 7-0 on a Ross Metheny to Derek Crosen 19 Yard touchdown pass. After a defensive stand Sherando got on the scoreboard once again on a David Hoopengarner 1 yard TD plunge to make the score 13-0. James Wood responded with a scoring drive of there own on a 3 yard Randy Brannon touchdown run. With the score now 13-7 the quick strike Sherando offense scored again on David Hoopengarner's second touchdown of the evening. With the score now 19-7 James Wood was determined to stay in this game. A 1 yard touchdown run by Randy Brannon took us into half-time with a 19-14 Sherando lead.
After intermission both teams defense came out fired up and ready to shut down the opposing teams offense. At the 7:00 minute mark in the 4th quarter James Wood took the lead on a beautiful 38 yard TD pass from Aaron Butler to Jordan Dallman. After a successful 2pt conversion James Wood was now in the lead 22-19. With momentum clearly on the James Wood sideline the Sherando offense looked to there star quarterback Ross Metheny to get back in the game. Sherando moved the ball down the field and looked like they were in a groove. With 2:30 left in the game Metheny threw a slant pass that appeared to be caught by Sherando and intercepted by James Wood. After a lengthy referee discussion the play was awarded a catch and Sherando's ball at the 27 yard line. With 1:26 left in the game Sherando was facing a 4th and 3 from the 5 yard line. Coach Bill Hall decided to attempt a 22 yard field goal. Tyler Greatorex attempt was good making the score now 22-22.
James Wood received the kickoff and took over at the 35 yard line. Two plays later James Wood quarterback Aaron Butler's pass sailed high and was intercepted by Joel Witt at mid-field. After a few plays Sherando was called there last time out and faced a 3rd and 3 from the 9 yard line with 9 seconds remaining. Quarterback Ross Metheny dropped back and found a diving Joel Witt for the game winning touchdown.
James Wood proved tonight that they are a talented team that wears there heart on their sleeve. Both of these teams deserved to win this game tonight but in the end the scoreboard read Sherando 29 James Wood 22.
