Twyman leads Bulldogs over Spartans
Senior running back Josh Twyman was too much for the young Spartans as Twyman ran for two touchdowns and 184 yards as Martinsburg W.V. (3-1) defeated Broad Run (1-3) 42-14. Twyman scored early in the first quarter on a 29 yard run to start what would be an offensive showing for the Bulldogs who totaled 447 through the night.
In the first half the Spartans kept pace with the Bulldogs starting with a long drive behind the running of Junior Billy Rocca and a series of consecutive completions from QB Cole Shain to five different Spartan receivers. The drive culminated on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Shain to Senior Adrian Mines to bring the Spartans back within 3 points. The TD catch was Mines 5th of the year.
In the 2nd quarter, Twyman broke loose again around the right end for a 38 yard run to extend the Bull dog lead to 9. An eighteen play, 64 yard responding drive from the Spartans was stalled by 2 key penalties, a symptom that was to re-occur and kill four more drives later in the game. The Bulldogs then drove the field and jumped up by 15 on a run by Bulldog QB Dustin Peters. The Spartans countered on the pursuing kickoff as Senior Clayton Abel returned 80 yards for the touchdown. The Spartans received the ball with 26 seconds left and drove 40 yards to the Bulldog 13 yard line. However a 30 yard field goal attempt by Matt Sedlmeyer sailed slightly right of the uprights leaving the Spartan's trailing at half 22-14.
The second half started the tailspin for the Spartans as the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick and then quickly scored on a 30 yard touchdown pass. The Spartan's Offense totaled only 48 yards in the second half hampered by penalties and a stingy Bulldog defense.
The Spartans finished a tough non-district schedule and face Freedom High school Friday Sept 29th.
