Lions End Eagles 3 Year Unbeaten Record

Tallwood played its season opener against Landstown and were determined to prove their worth in the Beach District. That is exactly what they did. The Eagles had their usual confidence, almost cockiness entering the game as the three year defending District Champs, but the Lions had something to prove. At first, it looked like Landstown would continue their winning streak of 30 regular season games without a loss, striking early, but in the second quarter, they woke the Lions and paid the price.

Following a Landstown fumble, Brian Jackson guided the Lions down to the Eagles 8 and on the next play, he went to hand off to his running back who slipped in the rain soaked field and then instinctively took the ball in from 8 yards out for the touchdown. The extra point gave the Lions a 7-6 lead.

That gave the Lions the momentum they needed and in the third quarter, Jackson threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Julius Delbridge to help give Tallwood a 13-6 lead.

Landstown never recovered. Other than the first quarter, Boyce was unable to move the offense and the defense was plagued by poor tackling.

As the rain began to fall heavier in the fourth quarter, Jackson sealed the victory when he recovered a fumble and returned it 3 yards for a 20-6 lead with 7:04 left in the game.

"That was our goal," said Tallwood coach Thad Harold. "We wanted to be the first team to put an end to their winning streak."

Tallwood plays at Green Run next week and Landstown hosts Kellam.
