Stone Bridge Comes From Behind to Win 34-21

(ASHBURN, VA) - Mother nature did her best to keep Stone Bridge and West Springfield from taking the field in their season opener, but in the end, both teams started their 2006 campaigns on positive notes. West Springfield jumped out to a early 14-0 lead with the running of tailback A.J. Johnson and the passing of quarterback Peter Lalich. Johnson made the score 7-0 on a 5 yard dash on the opening drive of the game, and Lalich tossed a 30 yard touchdown pass to Scott Williams after the Spartans had picked off a Terence Glenn pass in Bulldog territory.

Stone Bridge would answer on the next drive when Terence Glenn hit Matt Irwin on a nice flat route in the end-zone to bring the score within seven points. Lalich went right back to work and tossed a 40 yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 21-14. The 2nd quarter would end with that score and Bulldog fans have some doubts about being able to stop Lalich and the Spartans.

Bulldog Kareem Alexander took the opening kickoff of the 2nd half 70 yards down to the Spartan 20 yard line, and on the first play of the drive, Devon Brown scooted 20 yards for a score to tie the game at 21-21. Then, head coach Mickey Thompson caught the Spartans sleeping on the ensuing kickoff by calling for an onside kick. The Bulldogs recovered and the momentum shifted in the game toward Stone Bridge's favor.

With quarterback Terence Glenn and running back Devon Brown both having trouble with cramps, juniors Mike Stancik and Jeron Gouveia took over the Bulldog offense. Gouveia and Stancik led the Bulldogs on two scoring drives to take the game to 34-21, and Stone Bridge never looked back.
