Spartans Fall Short In Opener 48-20 to Paul IV
Senior Paul VI quarterback Daniel Mangas passed for four TDs as the Panthers spoiled the Virginia debut of Spartan head coach Michael Burnett on a soggy Monday night in Fairfax 48-20. After a quick exchange of possessions by both teams, the Panthers jumped to a quick 14-0 lead on a 7 yard scamper from Senior FB Alex Soltis and a 26 yard pass from Mangas to Senior Panther wide-out Zach Costello.
In the second quarter the Spartan defense continuously harassed Mangas sacking the Paul VI quarterback three times and forcing a string of incomplete passes. The Spartan offense then came roaring back on two touchdown passes (43, 42) from Junior quarterback Cole Shain to Adrian Mines (SR) to bring the Spartans back within 2 points. The Spartans nearly took the lead at the end of the 1st half driving the length of the field behind the strong running of Sr. Clayton Abel, but fell just short as the clock ran out.
In the second half, Mangas caught fire going 10-13 with 3 TDs. Panther running keept the Spartan defense off-balance and the offense on the side line. The Shain-Mines TD connection occurred again in the 4th quarter, but the Spartans (0-1) could not hold back the Panther (1-0) attack and suffered their first loss of the season.
Coach Burnett can take several positives out of the loss including a strong performance from the Spartan offense lead by Abel with 161 yards rushing, Mines with 127 yards receiving (3 TDs), and Shain 15 of 28 for 256 yards. Junior wide outs Adam Luhman (4-57) and Tommy Meier (3-43) also provided strong support in the Spartan comeback attempt.
