Spartans Defeat Eagles
Following a touching tribute to a fellow student who passed away earlier this week, the Broad Run Spartans delivered a powerful welcome message to their first Dulles District opponent, the Freedom Eagles. On the first possession of the game for the Eagles, running back Ron Hill was hit by Spartan Sr Matt Smith fumbling the ball on the Eagles 15 yard line. Three plays later Spartan QB Cole Shain connected with Senior Adrian Mines for a 13 yard touch down strike for an early 6-0 lead. On the pursuing Falcon possession, the Spartan defense caused another fumble, this time recovering the ball on the Eagle's 19 yard line. Two plays later the Spartan's were back in the end zone on a 9 yard carry by Senior RB Clayton Abel. Before the first period would close, Shain once again found Mines for a scoring strike of 19 yards putting the Spartans ahead 20-0.
In the second quarter the Eagles's were finally able to put together a twelve play, 50 yard drive capped off by a 1 yard run by FB Terry Mizell. The Eagle celebration was short however as Clayton Abel returned the pursuing kick-off 70 yards down to the Eagle 10 yard line. The Spartans struck quickly again, this time three plays later on a 16 yard pass from Shain to Senior tight end Mark McGlone.
The halftime break did not provide any sign of hope for the Eagle's as on the initial kick-off, Adrian Mines returned the ball 83 yards for a touchdown pushing the Spartan lead to 34-6. Mines finished the game with 138 all purpose yards. With most starters pulled at the end of the 3rd quarter, Sophomore QB Chris Jessop found Junior Tommy Meier for a 36 yard touchdown strike for a final score of 41-6. On the play, Meier eluded 4 Falcon defenders for the score. The Spartan defense remained tough stopping Eagle QB Corey Pugh on the Spartan 7 yard line as time expired.
Additional highlights included Abel's 199 all purpose yards in which he led all runners with 129 yards on 13 carries and the Spartan defense forcing 3 fumbles and holding the Eagle season leading rusher, Ron Hill to 15 yards on 4 carries. On the night, QB Cole Shain passed the 800 yard mark with an efficient evening, completing 9 of 13 for 89 yards and three TDs in three quarters. The Spartans next foe is their cross-town rival the Potomac Falls Panthers.
