Defense Paves Way for Burnett's First Victory

(Ashburn, VA) Broad Run coach Michael Burnett got his first victory as the head coach for the Spartans in a 30-0 victory over the visiting Cougars from Manassas Park. The Spartan defense paved the way for the victory holding the Cougars to 16 total offensive yards as the Cougars (0-2) never mounted a scoring threat throughout the night. Defensive standouts were many, but were highlighted by the sack attack of George Black, Robbie Buckman, Matt Smith, Bryce Phillips, and Matt Sedlmeyer who continuously kept the Cougars in long yardage situations during the night. A bone jarring hit by Junior linebacker Dustin Locascio and an interception by safety Adam Luhman silenced any hopes of the Cougar offense.

Offensively the Spartans put together another “show” putting up over 440 total offensive yards. The Shain-Mines connection carried over from last week on the first play from scrimmage on a 50 yard bomb from QB Cole Shain to Senior WR Adrian Mines. Mines finished the game with seven receptions for 164 yards and 1 touchdown. Shain distributed passes across the field to receivers Tommy Meier, Adam Luhman, Mark McGlone, and Clayton Abel. Abel led the Spartans in rushing (17-64) supported by a litany of Spartan backs that totaled for over 174 yards on the ground. Spartan Sophomore QB Chris Jessop capped the scoring on a nifty 33 yard touchdown pass to Sophomore Kevin Sandersen. The Spartans will need to overcome mental errors (9 penalties for 70 yards) in order to defeat two outstanding teams from West Virginia (Jefferson and Martinsburg) that come to Spartan field over the next two weeks
