Broad Run Falls To Solid Jefferson Team 20-0

(Ashburn, VA) - The Broad Run Spartans (1-2) took the field confidently against WV power Jefferson Cougars (2-2) on a rain soaked night put came up on the short end of the score loosing 20-0 on a game that was any one's to win until the last few minutes in the 4th quarter. Following a quick exchange of possessions after the opening kickoff, the Spartans drove down to the Cougar 19 yard line only to be turned away by an interception by the Cougars Dewey McDonald as he stepped in front of a pass from QB Cole Shain to wide out Adrian Mines. The Cougars then drove the length of the field to be stopped on a 4th and 13 from the Spartan 28 yard line. A “phantom” interference penalty on the play thrown by a far back judge cost the Spartan's dearly as the Cougars turned the error into a quick touchdown as Cougar QB Jon Hash connected with speedy wide out Justin Grantham two plays later. Neither team could mount much offense the remainder of the first half as the rain poured down on the teams as they exited for the halftime.

The Cougars opened the second half driving down to the Spartan 17 yet being held scoreless on a missed field goal. Following a quick 3 and out Cougar punt returner Grantham muffed a sky high punt from Spartan George Black however recovered his own fumble in a pile of bodies and mud. Hash then connected again with a long pass to Ryland Newman on a 3rd and 14 to push the lead to 13-0.

The Spartans second scoring opportunity of the night game at the Cougar 1 yard line early in the 4th period following a pass from TB Chris Jessop to WR Tommy Meier. On first and goal from the 2 yard line the Spartans were unable to score as ball slipped away from Spartan's Clayton Abel on a tough second effort try. Abel finished the game with 59 bruising yards as backs from both sides found footing difficult and the defensive front eight tough. Defensively the Spartans recorded 6 sacks against the Cougars led by JR defensive tackle Robbie Buckman (3 Sacks) and Senior Zach Austin (2 Sacks).

The Cougars scored a final time with 2 minutes remaining after the Spartan's deflected a long pass intended for Grantham into the hands of Cougar wide out Brandon Hyler. The game was marked by untimely errors, penalties and bad bounces for the Spartans throughout the night.
