2006 All Gameday Watch - Panhandle Edition

Ross Metheny - Sophomore QB - Sherando Warriors
Matheny is a sophomore by grade level, but in terms of football he is way ahead of the game. As a freshman Matheny threw for 1918 yards and 17 touchdowns, both are single season records for Sherando football. Entering his sophomore season he is less than 1000 yards from becoming the career passing leader held by Cincinnati Bengal Kelley Washington. At 6'3 185lbs Matheny has the size and tools colleges are looking for. Ross Matheny displays the mental ability to break down defensive coverages and the physical skills to make all throws needed to play quarterback. Look for Matheny to continue to be a big time player for the Warriors this season.
J.J. Dorsey - Junior Quarterback - Handley Judges
Hands down J.J. Dorsey is the most dangerous football player in the Gameday Magazine area. Dorsey, only a junior, will return to the quarterback position where he was simply dominant last season. Dorsey rushed for 1300 yards and threw for 2500 yards in his sophomore season. Defenses game planned for Dorsey each game but the crafty quarterback still accounted for 316 total yards a game. This off season J.J. has worked hard to improve his throwing skills which could prove to be deadly with his running ability. With Dorsey's speed (4.5/ 40 yd) and leadership skills, expect Handley's offense to be in good shape once again in 2006.
Josh Twyman - Running Back - Martinsburg Bulldogs
Pound for pound Josh Twyman might be the toughest football player in the area. At 5'9 170lbs Twyman can either run around you or through you. Last season Twyman received first team all-state honors after leading his Bulldogs with 1300 rushing yards. Most runners lose stamina after numerous carries, Josh Twyman gets better. Expect Twyman to be the Bulldogs workhorse once again in 2006. With Twyman's ability and the play of the Bulldog line look for Josh to improve on his totals from last season.
Ryland Newman - Running Back - Jefferson Cougars
At anytime during a football game running back Ryland Newman is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. During Newman's junior season he ran for 1650 yards and 23 touchdowns on only 205 carries. These statistics earned Newman First Team All State honors last season. Newman uses his great agility and blazing speed to make up the perfect every down back. Each time Newman took the hand off last season he averaged an amazing 8 yards a carry. Newman displayed his game breaking ability last season numerous times including three games where he ran for 200 plus yards. Expect Ryland Newman to be used early and often in the Jefferson Cougar offense this season.
Daniel Kershner - Linebacker - Hedgesville
At 6'3 205lbs Daniel Kershner is an imposing football player. Kershner not only looks like a football player, he plays like one. The talented senior will be a three year starter for the Hedgesville football team this season. Kershner is a strong physical player who uses his speed and great instincts to track down opposing runners. Last season Kershner made 80 total tackles, had two sacks, and caused two fumbles. With Kershner flying around this season on defense, runners better tighten their chin strap! Look for middle linebacker Daniel Kershner to be a game changer this season.
