Westfield Blows Out Cox 34-0 in Benefit Game
Virginia Beach, VA – In tonight's VHSL exhibition benefit, the Westfield Bulldogs showed that they are primed for a run at the state championships this year. With many experts predicting a Bulldog run in 2007, this year's team made a statement in dispatching Cox 34-0 on the Falcon's home field.
The outcome did nothing for those who are trying to figure out if Cox is a real threat in a wide open Beach District. 34-0 is no picnic, but the game was not a lopsided as it may appear. After penalties and turnovers gave the Bulldogs excellent field position.
The Falcon defense twice held Westfield to chip-shot field goals. Trailing only 6-0, the Falcons offense again did nothing on offense and this time the defense could not hold, and Talbot was able to plunge in for a touchdown. On the ensuing possession, the Falcons threw three straight incomplete passes with just over a minute left in the first half, allowing the Bulldogs another shot. With time winding down, Westfield punched it in to make it 20-0.
The second half was all Westfield as the Falcons appeared deflated by the last second touchdown at the end of the first half. The Falcon defense that had been stout, began giving up five and six yard bursts up the middle. A beautiful 35 yard touchdown pass on the Bulldogs' next possesion was the prettiest play of the night, and put the game away for good.
Both teams start their regular season next week....
