Salem Football Preview

Coming into the 2006 season, the Sun Devils of Salem High believe that they are legitimate contenders for the Beach District title. The fact that they are returning 17 starters from last year's 8-2 team can only confirm those beliefs. In the District last season, Salem finished tied with Kellam and Kempsville for second place behind Landstown. The Sun Devils saw their 2005 season come to an end in a heart breaking loss in double overtime to Oscar Smith in the first round of the state playoffs. With a solid and experienced offensive line leading the way, Salem head coach Robert Jackson says his 2006 team is built to run. Coach Jackson also expects the Sun Devils to be right in the middle of title contention all the way to the end; if not at the top.

Quarterbacks
Going into the 2006 season, Coach Jackson does not have a clear-cut starter at the quarterback position. While this kind of uncertainty can have the tendency to create controversy in most camps, Jackson does appear to be worried as he feels like he has two solid leaders as his candidates. James McGraff returns from last season and will challenge incoming Atlantic Shores transfer Rick Kresinske for the starting job. At 6'5”, 215 lbs., Jackson admits that Kresinske is the more “pure passer” but will ultimately let the decision be made based on the players' performance on the field.

Running Backs
As a freshman and as a sophomore Salem running back Kevin Whaley posted back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. As a junior in 2006, he will look to do that and more. Whaley will get most of the touches in the Sun Devils' run-heavy offense with Tareek Boone leading the way at the fullback position.

Offensive Line
The Sun Devils are returning four offensive linemen from last year's squad including two All-District players in Scott Glasscock and Brandon Williamson. They will be joined by returning juniors Daniel Richardson and Donald Moore which will give this unit not only experience but youth as well.

Defensive Line
Coach Jackson says that his 2006 defensive line, “Might be one of the best in the region.” With the speed that he has coming from the outside and the good run-stopping support on the inside, he might just be right. The D-line will be led by the 6'5”, 275 lbs. Chimi Okili (who is starting to garner interest from some Division I schools) and will also feature Lendale Gibson and Daniel Richardson.

Linebackers
Renente Lasala and the previously mentioned Kevin Whaley will be playing the outside linebacker positions and Coach Jackson is still looking for someone to step up at the inside post. Jamal White will see playing time there.

Secondary
Jamal Conley and new-comer Montrel Wiggins will man the corner positions and Mike Razeeq returns as the team's free safety.

Kickers
Mike Sable comes back as the kicker and Coach Jackson will open up the competition as he searches for a new punter for the season.

Key Game: Friday, September 8 @ Kempsville
