McLister Wins Cheers Sports Tournament

On a beautiful sunny day at Lansdowne Golf Resort in Lansdowne, Virginia, Loudoun County's best golfers took the course to battle for first place and bragging rights within the county. All ten high schools were in attendance including Loudoun Valley and Stone Bridge who compete on the Group AAA level within their respective districts. The weather was great, but it was the play of Loudoun County's Kevin McLister that stole the show. McLister shot a tournament best round of 70 (2-under Par) on Lansdowne's Robert Trent Jones course. The win for McLister was accompanied with the news that he will be attending the University of Delaware next fall on a golf scholarship. While he felt he could play better, McLister was pleased with his performance.
“It's pretty satisfying, I wasn't the happiest with my play today, but it came out fine. My putting really helped me today,” McLister said after his win.
McLister's head golf coach John Laycock was very pleased with his star golfer's performance.
“Kevin came down here with some lofty goals. He played a super round and put a real solid round of golf together. This is a tough course and he did a nice job of taking what the course would give him,” Laycock said.
McLister won by a total of 4 shots over Heritage's Luke Davis and 5 shots over Loudoun Valley's Danny Bosse. Bosse has been playing very well this year with one win already under his belt. Davis is emerging as serious contender in the Dulles District this season.
On the team side of things, it was the Potomac Falls Panthers who took home first place in the Cheers Sports Tournament Tuesday at Lansdowne. The Panthers put together a great team performance with every one of their golfers posting scores in the 70's. Head Coach David Quirin was excited with their play.
We pulled it out, and it was unbelievably close. We just played well enough to win it today. My guys played unbelievably well. They played very consistent today and that is going to get it done for you in high school golf. We had 4 great scores,” Quirin said.
Quirin is excited about the play in the Dulles District and how this season is going to shake out.
“It's up in the air right now, we have a tough match with Heritage and both teams are very evenly matched. Every stroke will count in district play and it will be that way for every single team.”
Tournament organizer and Broad Run head golf coach John Costello was very pleased with how the tournament went at Lansdowne on Tuesday. Costello sees high school golf getting more and more popular within the schools.
“We are starting to see kids practicing year round and that is improving the play of every team in our area. It's exciting to see places like Lansdowne Resort and companies like Cheers Sports get behind junior golf and help make these types of events happen,” Costello said.
District play continues this week for all of the teams that competed on Tuesday. Stay tuned for more high school golf coverage right here online at www.gamedaymagazine.com .
