Local Players Take Home Skills Challenge Titles

On Saturday July 8th, 2006, TCC Sports hosted its first Skills Challenge Competition at Dominion High School. The TCC Sports Skills Challenge consisted of three events and featured the best athletes from the TCC Sports Gridiron Combine, and also the All Pro Champions Football Camp that was held from Wednesday July 5th through Saturday.
The first aspect of the Skills Challenge was the strongest man competition. The event featured 4 finalists that included 3 players from Liberty High School and one from Stone Bridge High School. Liberty's Mark Spence and Devaughn Parson both took home the honor of being named the strongest men after posting an impressive 24 repetitions each on the bench press at 185 lbs. Parson and Spence took home the best total and were followed by fellow teammate Chris Hunter and Stone Bridge's Greg Fenner. Liberty's Devaughn Parson was excited about the number of repetitions he was able to put up.
“I'm excited that I did more reps today than I did at the Combine. I've been working hard for the season in the weight room, and today's output on the bench is proof that I'm getting stronger,” Parsons said.
After the strongest man competition, it was on to decide who would be named the fastest man. Eight total participants squared off against each other in the opening round. Stone Bridge's Terence Glenn, King George's Tremayne Dameron, Liberty's Myles Reid, and Liberty's Sam Ball-Whitfield all advanced to the semi-finals with solid wins. Dameron and Fenner advanced to the finals with close victories in the semi-final races. In the end, it was Tremayne Dameron who earned the right to be called the fastest man on Saturday after he narrowly edged out Fenner in the championship race. Dameron stole the show by running a 4.39 clocked 40 yard dash earlier in the week at the All Pro Champions Camp, and won the event on Saturday running in basketball shoes.
“I think I could have run a little better with track shoes, but I felt good and my times were good today. The last race was close, but I was able to just nudge past Greg to finish first,” Dameron said.
Over on the football field, the quarterbacks took center stage with the accuracy skills challenge and the longest throw competition. Several of the best quarterbacks from the area competed, but it was Briar Wood's Alex Munro who stole the show with this accuracy. Munro won the Accuracy Challenge with the best accumulation of time and total completions in the group. Munro was pleased with his performance.
“It was neat to compete against some of the better quarterbacks from the area and come away with the victory. Some of the throws were tough, but I felt good throwing the ball, Munro said.
On the longest throw, it was Stone Bridge's Terence Glenn who proved to be the man with the big arm. Glenn's first throw sailed at least 20 yards past everyone else's to land at 67 yards, and he took home the victory for the longest throw. When asked about taking home the honor, Glenn had this to say.
“I work hard on being able to throw the long ball and I think it is one my favorite throws. I just wanted to make sure I threw a good ball to give myself a chance.”
