Cox Girls Put Prom on Hold to Win Soccer Title

The Cox Falcons Girls soccer team were excited about the prom, but their dates were going to have to wait, because they had soccer to play first. In overtime, they defeated the Kellam Knights 2-1 to win the Eastern Region championship game at Powhatan Field. Both teams advance to Tuesday’s Group AAA state quarterfinals. Cox (17-1-3) will host Northwest Region runner-up Garfield . Kellam (19-3) will travel to Northwest champion Forest Park.

It was an exciting finish in the 89th minute when senior Whitney Schieble blasted a free kick 30 yards into a crowd of defenders. When Knights Tiffany Gloshen tried to kick the ball away from the net, she inadvertently kicked it into the goal. About a minute later it was over and the Falcons ran onto the field to celebrate the title win for the first time in three years.

Coach Mario Hurdle said "It was a battle." Many of the Falcons were seen sprinting to their cars to get back to Virginia Beach in time for their prom with another reason to celebrate.
