Norfolk Sports Club Announces Scholarship Recipients
The Norfolk Sports Club awarded 18 scholarships to outstanding student athletes throughout Hampton Roads. Included is a brief Brief History of the Named Scholarships:
James G. Parke - A golf scholarship established in 1965 by Roy R. Charles in memory of a Past President (1955) of the NSC. Awarded this year to Kelly McAnnally from Landstown High School. The school's Golf MVP, Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year and Captain of the Soccer Team. She was the DECA President and is headed to Longwood.
Roy R. Charles - Established in 1977 in honor of a long devoted member of the NSC and awarded annually to a student with a high GPA. Awarded this year to Jessica Nicole Skeeter from Deep Creek High School where she was the Soccer Team captain, Class Secretary and earned the Director's Award from the Virginia Giovernor's School for Agriculture. She was awarded the Virginian Pilot Scholastic Achievement Award for her performance with the orchestra and carries a 4.537 GPA. Jessica is headed to Virginia Tech.
Tim Timmons - Established in 1987 in honor of the first and long time treasurer of the Scholarship Foundation and a dedicated member of the NSC. Awarded to a recipient most involved in school and community activities. This year's recipient is Kristin Nicole Sachs from Western Branch High School. A varsity Cheerleader, she is a member of the National Honor Society , volunteers at CHKD, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is heading to James Madison University.
John A. & John J. Baecher - Established in 1988 by the Baecher family in honor of their grandfather and father. It is awarded to a graduate of Maury High School. Dawn Nicole Page wins this scholarship for her performance in LaCrosse. She was Senior Class President, the Secretary for Maury's Chapter of habitat for Humanity and finished her high school career with a GPA of 4.38. Dawn is headed to UVA.
David Paul Weir - Established in 1992 by the Mac Weir family in memory of their son, David. It is awarded annually to a graduate of Cox or Western Branch High School. Colby Owen from Cox High School received this scholarship for her outstanding performance on and off the field this year. Captain of the Soccer team, she was named All Tidewater Player, 2nd Team All State, ranked 19th nationally with a record of 20-3-1 (Goalkeeper) and 13 shutouts. She was also Captain of the Field Hockey team and named to 1st Team All-State. Colby volunteers at Baylake United Methodist Church at the Judeo Christian Outreach Center. With a 3.69 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society, Colby is headed to ODU.
Donald G. Griffin - Established in 1994 by long time dedicated NSC member and former principal of Granby High School and awarded annually to a Granby graduate. Danielle Moran was this years recipient for her performance in and out of the classroom. She excelled at Field Hockey, Soccer and Track & Field where she competed in cross country and indoor track as well as the swimming team. As Captain of the Field Hockey Team, she was named 1st Team All-District and 2nd Team All-Region while maintaining a GPA of 3.63. She is headed to Christopher Newport to major in Business Administration.
James Hudgins - Established in 1995 by the Hudgins family in memory of their husband and father, a dedicated NSC member. Awarded to a graduating baseball player from Cox or First Colonial High School. Cody Daniel Allen was an outstanding athlete, playing basketball and baseball and ranked #1 of his graduating class. He volunteered on the year book staff, was an assistant coach at St. Pius Boys Basketball and is heading to Virginia Wesleyan.
William Litton - Established in 1995 in his memory and awarded to a graduating baseball player. From IC Norcam, Derrick West easily took the honors with outstanding performances in baseball, wrestling and football. With a GPA of 4.29, he is a member of the National Honor Society, a Deacon at New Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and volunteers at VCU Medical Hospital. He is headed to VCU where he will study Clinical Lab Sciences and Pharmacology.
Marty Brennaman - Established in 2001 in honor of his many contributions to the Tidewater area. Awarded to a Portsmouth High School Graduate. Nikos Marcus Cox from IC Norcam High School was Soccer Team captain, named First Youth Citizen of Portsmouth for 2006, named to the National Honor Society, was a People to People Sports Ambassador for Australiaand New Zealand and is headed to Virginia tech.
Alfred E. Abiouness - Established in 2002 by the Abiouness family to honor their husband and father, a longtime NSC member. Awarded to a golfer from Norfolk Catholic High School or any local high school as qualification permits. James Ryan Vita has played Golf at the Varsity level for 5 yearsand as captain for 2 years. He is a peer counselor volunteer, tutors children for "Bridge to the Future" and a Page for the Virginia House of Delegates. He is headed to UVA.
BB&T - Established in 2005 and awarded to an outstanding student athlete in honor of her devotion to her family and her many contributions to her school. Joanna Fariss from Maury High School receives this year's scholarship from BB&T. She was a cross country MVP, received the Tonnelson Award for Sportsmanship & Leadership, is a member of the fellowship of Christian Athletes and spent her Junior year in Italy to help start the Italian language program at Maury. She is headed to UVA.
The Past President's Award and Scholarship was awarded to Tanisha Sheree Robinson of Norview high School. She was a scholar athlete who played volleyball and soccer. She received the "Outstanding Volunteer Award" for various volunteer activities including NJROTC, Clean the Bay, Meals on Wheels etc. She is headed to Norfolk State University.
Six students were awarded the Norfolk Sports Club Scholarships.
Heather Mullis a repeat winner from Cox high School, currently at Virginia Tech, she competed in Cross Country, Indoor and outdoor Track. She was an NCAA Regional Qualifier in the 800 M, named All Big East in the 4x800 relay and holds the outdoor school record for the 4x800 relay. Her GPA at Tech is 3.50.
Danielle Cathcart from Lake Taylor High School played Field Hockey and was a member of the Swim team. She received the Coaches Award for Swimming, holds a GPA of 4.12, received the Va. Pilot Scholastic Achievement Award and is headed to William & Mary.
Jordan Chandler Moore from First Colonial High School is currently at Virginia Tech. She is on the Dean's List and majoring in the Science of Human Nutrition and Physical Therapy.
Alexis Cristy Feldt from Kellam High School is currently at VCU where she holds a GPA of 3.88. She competes at VCU on the Cross Country Team and Track & Field team. She is a member of the Student Government Association, the national Freshman Scholastic Honor Society and was named to the Dean's List. She volunteers at MCV Pediatric Emergency Room.
Chelsey Marx from Princess Anne High School was Captain of the Cheerleading team, part of the SCA Senate and a tutor at mailbu Elementary School. Chelsey also volunteers at the Richmond area YMCA with the Children in Special Programs. She is a member of the Lati Honors Society and is headed to VCU to major in Physical Therapy and minor in education.
Anastas Budagov from Norfolk Collegiate played Varsity Soccer, basketball and tennis. Earned the Oak Award for Soccer, was MVP for Tennis andholds a class rank of #2 out of 72. A Native of Baku of Armenian decent, he came to America in 1997 and worked 4 jobs while in High School, he spoke Greek and learned English. He is headed to George Mason University.
Each of the recipients received $2200 from the Norfolk Sports Club. We wish them all wonderful success.
