Liza Woodward Leads Cox to Semi Finals
Eastern Region Player of the Year Liza Woodward scored the lone goal of the game from 20 yards out to lead the Falcons to victory over the Northwest runner-up Indians 1-0. Woodward was excited that for the first time in her four years of playing at Cox (19-1-2), they had advanced to the Group AAA state semifinals. The Eastern Region champions will play the Northern Region's best, Centreville, at 3 p.m. Friday at Christopher Newport University. "It's awesome. I didn't want that to be my last game," said Woodward, who will attend James Madison in the fall.
Cox outshot Gar-Field 25-12, but was held scoreless until the second half. Kelly Morrison had come close with a header off a corner kick, but the ball sailed wide right. Morrison had another good chance in the 59th minute, but finally it was Woodward, moved up top from midfield for this game, who made it happen.
