Kellam's Jason Taylor Selected by KC
Kellam High School’s Jason Taylor was selected with the first pick of the second round in Tuesday’s Major League Baseball draft. Taylor, an infielder, who was hopeful he would go in the top five rounds, was especially surprised when the Kansas City Royals made him, the 45th overall pick. Taylor was hanging out with some friends when a family friend called and said to check out the computer. “I looked at the computer and I was shocked, and excited, I was speechless. I still am.” Taylor said.
Taylor, sho had signed to play at Clemson next season said, "For now, plans to attend Clemson are on hold." During his senior season Taylor batted over .400 and stole 19 bases during the regular season and was a first-team All-Beach District pick at shortstop.
The Royals took Old Dominion righthander Jason Godin in the fifth round, and ODU righthander Kevin Gunter went to the Reds in the 13th round. Scott Sizemore, a Virginia Commonwealth infielder who played at Hickory High, went to Detroit in the fifth round. Virginia lefthander and Ocean Lakes graduate Mike Ballard was taken by the Rangers in the 14th round.
