Morrison, Brown Lead Wildcats To Regional Titles
The Great Bridge Wildcats won the boys and girls track and field titles, and they did it with some outstanding performances.
Mike Morrison put his name in Virginia track and field history on Saturday, clearing 17-6-1/2 in the pole vault. Morrison also now has the nation's top high school performance in the event this season. Morrison's victory helped the Wildcats score 51 points to edge Bayside, which finished with 49 points. Cox was third with 47.
For the girls, Wildcats multi-event specialist Janet Brown became the first female in meet history to win four individual titles. Brown, who won the shot put and long jump on Friday, came back on Saturday to take the triple jump and discus. She won the triple jump on her final attempt of the day at 38-6. She won the discus with a throw of 112-10. The Lady Wildcats finished with 86 points, followed by Deep Creek (75) and Hampton (51).
The Wildcats are optimistic going into next week's state championship. First-year Great Bridge boys coach Gabe Whetmore was thrilled and said, "We rested a lot of guys to get ready for next week's state meet and feel It's going to shape up to be a very competitive meet."
