Shannon Rogers Wins Beach District Tennis
Shannon Rogers has a lethal inside-out forehand and lots of power. On Wednesday, she used that to win her first Beach District tennis title, dispatching teammate Kirra Summers 6-1, 6-0 on the First Colonial courts.
The Falcons' best is a better player than she was a year ago, quicker thanks to strength and agility training that has made her lighter on her feet. Everything worked for her against Summers, who completed an outstanding tournament herself, surviving teammate Imee Bautista, the Falcons' No. 2 player, in Tuesday's semifinals.
In that match, the lefthanded Summers, who played No. 3 all season, jumped to a 6-1 lead before Bautista's power overwhelmed her early in the second. But Summers rallied from 0-4, taking pace off the ball to force errors from Bautista, and taking the next six games.
Both players advance to the Eastern Region quarterfinals on May 22 against opponents from the Southeastern District.
