Rogers & Bautista Lead Cox to State Semifinals
The defending state champion Falcons (16-0) defeated the Northwest runner-up Fauquier 5-0 Tuesday at Lynnhaven Middle School, led by Imee Bautista and Eastern Region champion Shannon Rogers.
Cox advances to a 9 a.m. Friday date at Huntington Park in Newport News with Northern champion Chantilly, a rematch of last year’s state semifinal won by the Falcons 5-4. The Chargers, led by Georgia Southern-bound Kristi Kegerreis, nearly defeated Cox last year, and this young Falcons squad doesn't match that one in depth. This will be the biggest challenge for the Falcons who have dominated all season.
Rogers remains confident, having recently watching the movie “Miracle,” about the 1980 U.S. hockey team winning Olympic gold in her history class, she said, “We’re going to show folks another miracle,” she assured. “We’re not going to lose.”
