Landstown Sweeps Track Team Titles
VIRGINIA BEACH - The Eagles became the first school in more than a decade to sweep both boys and girls track team titles, last accomplished in 1992 when Salem accomplished it. “We always talked about this being a complete program,” Landstown boys coach Tom Anderson said. “We’ve had success but now our young ladies have it, too.”
“I’m not surprised but some of them really stepped up and really rocked it,” Landstown girls coach Dave Coulter said. “It was awesome and it was just a total team effort.” Sophomore Leah Brown won the 100 meters in an area-best time of 12.11. Sophomore Cierra McGee was equally impressive, posting top times in the area to win the 200 (24.49) and 400 (55.75). She also placed second in the long jump. The Eagles also got help from senior Whitney Etheridge , who won the shot put with an area-best throw of 38-11. Eagles freshman Jessica Williams was second.
The boys were led by seniors R.J. Wilson and James Soloman . Wilson successfully defended his shot put title and placed second in the discus. Soloman led from start to finish to win the 800 meters. Landstown’s Jonathan Bunker placed second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600, and sprinters Kevin Wilson and Jamal Blyden were runners-up in the 400 and 200, respectively.
The boys team scored 126 points to win its third straight title and fourth in five years. Cox was runner-up with 94 points, and Bayside was third with 86. Bayside’s Charles Clark was clearly the meet’s most outstanding performer posting some of the top times in the state, winning the 100 (10.63), 200 (21.49) and the 400 (47.98).
