Kara Wright Leads Virginia to National Title

Ninety-seven of the nation's top high school senior gymnasts, from 15 states, competed at the High School Gymnastics Nationals on Thursday and Friday at Eckerd College and South Hampton Roads gymnasts took the top three spots in the all-around competition . The Virginia team, with Salem Coach Wendy Cauthen at the helm, finished first with a score of 114.225. New York was second at 111.6, with Texas third at 109.175.

Kara Wright won the all-around competition with a 38.4 total. Rochelle Robinson of Indian River was second at 37.925, with Talia Tossone of Kellam third at 37.725. Wright, a four-time Virginia state all-around champion, also won three of the four individual events. In the vault, Wright was first with a 9.85. Amanda Bressette of Landstown was second at 9.6. Tossone was third at 9.55, with Robinson fifth at 9.35. On bars, Wright was first with a 9.7. Robinson was third at 9.6, with Tossone eighth at 9.225. Wright also was first on floor with a 9.85, and Tossone was second at 9.775. On beam, Tossone was second at 9.7, Wright third at 9.575, Bressette fourth at 9.50 and Robinson fifth at 9.375.

Kara Wright was selected as the Female Athlete of the Year for First Colonial High School and Athlete of the Year for all of Virginia Beach. You can read her story in the June issue of Gameday Magazine in Hampton Roads on June 15.

Other members of the team were Callie Jenkins of Cox, Ashley Jackson-Horne of Green Run, Erin Stack of Stonewall Jackson in Manassas and Kimberly Luckett of Lake Braddock in Northern Virginia.
