Deep Creek Wins Big at Beach Blast
Beach Blast Tournament produces surprise wins for some.
Deep Creek 4, Mills Godwin 3: The Hornets (5-3) surprised the No. 1 team in Richmond as Cliff Alder's run-scoring single with one out in the seventh made the difference. Reliever Andrew Wharton got the final out in top of the seventh to notch his first victory. Justin Hess stroked a two-run double in Deep Creek's three-run second inning. Sophomore starter Greg Forrest limited Mills Godwin to five hits and struck out five in six-plus innings.
Mills Godwin, ranked No. 38 nationally by Baseball America, had beaten Princess Anne, No. 1 in South Hampton Roads and No. 45 nationally, in its tournament opener.
Zach Alexander had a run-scoring single for the Chiefs, who built a 4-0 lead. Kempsville 4, Deep Run 2: Neil Ramirez improved his record to 3-0 for the No. 9 Chiefs (4-2-1).
Cox 4, Churchland 3: Greg Amorosso's fielder's choice knocked in the tying run and Nick Rubes' sacrifice fly plated Clint Schueler with the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh for the No. 7 Falcons (5-2-1).
James River 12, Hickory 2: Austin Stadler hit a pair of home runs and produced five RBIs to derail the No. 8 Hawks (5-3). Doug Cochrane and Tim Black had two hits apiece for Hickory.
